Another Bummer Summer

Welcome back Milwaukeeworlders…………

Another week has come and gone and it seems as if it was nothing more than a repeat of the week before.  Ever see that movie Groundhog Day?  The Brewers were patsies for the Cubs (and that in itself is abysmal,) the Packers drop another one and the Koreans continue to whine in chorus with the International Gymnastics Federation.

The good thing about the Brewers is that we know what needs to be fixed and we still have a chance to work on it this season.  All we need is hitting, pitching, running and defense and we will have it all back together.  I sincerely hope that we do not see them give up on the remainder of the season because the fans and the league deserve every ounce of energy and effort they can muster.

Meanwhile, Mike Sherman continues to announce that everything is really super at 1400 Lombardi Avenue.  That loss the other night is just an exhibition game.  He is happy with the play of Carroll and B J Sander.  All the Pack has to do is move the ball to the opposition 40 on every drive and Sander will be able to get it close to the end zone some of the time.   The goalie for the U S Women’s Soccer Team kicks farther than he does.  Our new blitzing defense will completely negate the gaping hole at left corner and, anyway, Ahmad Carroll is coming along really great.

I can only hope that Sherman hasn’t been spending too much time with Republican politicians.  You know those who announce that the economy is great, the war is going great and that they have a handle on everything and have all the answers.  In spite of the facts that show just the opposite.  I am hopeful that these exhibition games are just that and that they don’t really mean anything, but the first team offense did spend a lot of time on the field the other night and there was not a lot to show for it.  We need to hope that the absence of Flanigan and Wahle is the reason we seem to be ineffectual and that things will come together at Carolina in a couple of weeks.  It seems hard to believe that the summer has come and gone but with the kickoff of the regular season just a few days away, Autumn has arrived.

And one final thing about the Paul Hamm issue.  If the Gymnastics Federation is going to use a video replay to determine the starting value (which they did), then they also need to use the same video to review the performance itself.  If they had done that, they would have seen the Korean with two mandatory deductions for 2/10 that would have dropped him to fourth place despite the higher starting value.  If anything, they should take away the Korean’s bronze medal and award it to the guy who got fourth.  Hamm won it fair and square and none of us should put up with anyone who says different.

With the completion of the 2004 Olympic Games (FINALLY)…….There are quite a few comments that need to be expressed to you, my fellow American sports fans……..So, like it or not, here you go………

Super duper snaps to Misty and Kerrie for a great gold in beach volleyball and to Holly and Elaine for bronze.  They will all be in Chicago this weekend for the AVP tourney. And snaps to the USA Women’s Soccer, Basketball and Softball teams and even some snaps for USA Men’s Basketball.  I am not going to jump all over them.  Not just because I defended them before but because I think they did pretty well given the circumstance.  Four of the five Argentina starting players are in or will be in the NBA.  The other used to be in the NBA.  They have played together on that national team for five years and some of them have been playing together in that system since they were young teens.  We send our boys to practice for five weeks to play against guys who have been playing together for years.  You can do that when you are really far superior to the opposition but I don’t think we can put together a team of players from the USA that is really for more superior to the teams from the rest of the world.  We can beat them but we have to change our attitude and we have to change they way we prepare.

In four years we will have it together.

The Olympics are over and there were none of the problems that the experts predicted.  Remember that in the future when you hear experts making dire predictions.  They won’t come to pass.  The opposite is also true, those who predict a sure victory are also often wrong.  Be careful not to pay too much attention to consensus opinion.

Remember that too when the Packers begin play in two weeks and the Bucks head back to the Cousins Center in a few day as well. Also remember that when our Milwaukee Brewers complete their disappointing, but far from disastrous second season under Ned Yost. I can guarantee you Milwaukeeworlders, if Hottie can pack on some pounds and Jenkins can FINALLY get healthy and Bennie continues to throw as hard as he has this season, we will be a true, real-deal, top-notch competitor next season.

Mark my words friends; this will be the last losing season for our beloved Milwaukee Brewers. Next year we can plan on packed stadiums and more winning than losing.

You can count on it!

Until we meet again Milwaukeeworlders, remember that the world of sports is as ever changing as our Wisconsin weather and we must always remember to keep our ears open and our noses clean.
