Someone’s Got Some Explaining to Do.......

Welcome back Milwaukeeworlders to another edition of Marty the Sports Chick. I would like to focus on one issue this week and that my friends, is point blank EVERY DAMN THING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE WORLD OF PRO SPORTS IN THE LAST SEVEN DAYS.

Let me explain......

There seems to be some confusion about the Greater Milwaukee Open, OOPS, I mean the U. S. Bank Open played here this weekend. See, even I am confused. Our tournament has always been sort of an ugly stepsister to the "real" PGA tour due to it's timing. Either too early or too late for a tune-up event, the stars stay away.

We do get our dose of local heroes with Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker always showing up but there is a noticeable absence of the big names. That doesn't mean there is an absence of talent. Kelly, Kenny Perry, Scott Verplank and Fred Funk are all in the top twenty of Ryder Cup points. And when that Quigley shot a 64 on Saturday, I don't care what name recognition you have, you don't shoot that score on any PGA course with smoke and mirrors. It is about talent. In three weeks we will see the "real" players come back to Wisconsin for the PGA up north of here but the play we had the opportunity to see here this weekend was pretty fabulous as well. Remember that next year Milwaukeeworlders, when, by the way, you won't have to rent a room for $300 a night and spend $120 for a one-day ticket to get in.

The hype that surrounds these major tournaments is so overwhelming that we sometimes forget the essence of sport. That is, who can put it all together on a particular day or series of days to be the best in that moment. There is no doubt that Tiger is the best but so far this year, even he cannot put it all together to be the best in any particular moment. Mickelson got it together once or twice this year and the list goes on for a while with other names. Point being, had Todd Hamilton won the U.S. Bank Open this week and not the Scottish Open last week, he wouldn't have become a household name but it wouldn't mean he was any less talented or less of a competitor. It would have meant there was less hype. We all need to return to a sense of proper perspective and quit letting the opinionated media and the spin-doctors tell us what to think. Congratulations to Carlos Franco, a guy who didn’t start to play until his mid-teens, who never had a lesson until he was twenty years old, who never warms up, and comes from a small South American country with about ten golf courses.  It is fitting that he came to Milwaukee to play on a public course and walked away the champ.   It isn't just about the paycheck or the exemption or any of that, it is about taking your moment in time and making the most of it.

The Season is Just Around the Corner.......

Training camp is getting ready to open at St. Norbert and there is a story that the Packers are courting Randy Moss. Seems there is a great fit for him in Green Bay. Since we already have a Couch and a Davenport, all we need is a lazy boy. I didn't make it up, just repeating.

And in other NFL news, what the hell is going on in Miami? ESPN is reporting that Ricky Williams has decided that at the outrageously antiquated age of 27 he is going to retire and move to Asia to experience a different way of life.

Yes, Milwaukeeworlders, you did not misread that, the freaking heart of the Miami Dolphins is RETIRING at the age of 27 to start anew. A new? A new freakin what Ricky? You have the best life a man can have.

Is there more to this story, you ask? Umm........YEAH, THAT’S WHAT I’M THINKING, WHAT ABOUT YOU? The man leaves a team that he is the heart and sole of to begin a life filled with culture and refinement, in Asia mind you, and leaves his employer in the biggest mess Miami has seen since Hurricane Hugo.  I am pretty sure that that positive marijuana test was just an aberration earlier this year.

Pretty Classy Ricky, Pretty Classy!

I can guarantee you Milwaukeeworlders that there is much more to this story than we have been told and hopefully in the near future we will find out what the hell is going down in Gatorville.

Just a notion here, but does Mr. Williams possibly think Miami is not large enough to house two over-paid, over-hyped egotistical jackasses now that Shaq has moved to the neighborhood?

---Just a little thought to ponder Milwaukeeworlders---

Can the Crew Break the Blues????

I am hopeful the Brewers can get out of this funk they are in lately. When we were six over even, I thought we might be in the race for a wild card spot. I still think we can do it because it appears that the Cubs have decided that  the wild card is where their sights are set. Dusty Baker as much as admitted it last week in St. Louis.

Speaking of St. Louis, a team I cannot stand, I hope you all observed the hustle and smart base-running and overall dedication to greatness exhibited by Albert Pujols this week. Just three short years ago he was a rookie trying to make the team, now he is a mega contract millionaire and like the other big namers in Pro Baseball, Jeter, I Rod, A Rod and Thome, he plays with enthusiasm and comes to kick your ass every day. This guy is the real deal folks. Flat out, the real deal.

With the Crew opening a long home stand against foes, Chicago, Pitt, and Cinci, they have got to get out of this cesspool they are in and play some freakin ball. The road trip is over boys, let’s get our butts in gear and play they way we all know you can.

And One More Note Milwaukeeworlders.........

Um, okay.....How unbelievably AWESOME is Lance Armstrong? With a record setting sixth STRAIGHT Tour de France win on Sunday, Armstrong, in my measly opinion; just may be the Greatest Athlete Ever in the History of American Sports. This guy is phenomenal. His passion, dedication and commitment to racing added with the determination and work ethic he has instilled in himself is strictly astonishing.

Who the hell can disagree with me on this? People can say Jordan is the best, or Favre, or Bo.....But those people, who do think that, again in my measly opinion, are freaking morons.

Until we meet again Milwaukeeworlders, keep your ears open and your noses clean.
