Is There Really a Chance?

By Martha Coultas

Hello again Milwaukee sports enthusiasts. After a grueling few weeks of Wisconsin Sporting disappointment, such as the Wisconsin Badgers losing in the second round to an overrated Pitt team, not to mention in their own home state. But, Marquette, a final four team of just one year ago, not even making the pack of 64 as well as the announcement from Paul Horning that basically called all African American athletes undeniably stupid and unable to get in to “highly academic” colleges because the bars are set too high. GIVE ME A BREAK.

But, my fellow Milwaukeeans, as I promised you last week, I am devoting this week’s column to an issue I take very seriously and hold very dear to my soul. The Milwaukee Bucks.

After an unavoidably ridiculous schedule in the month of March, winning only five of the sixteen games they played, the team is anticipating making the playoffs under first year head coach Terry Porter, (Possibly the greatest player ever to emerge from this great state we all call home) with only two returning starters from one season ago. With only Michael Redd (First time All-Star AND January player of the month in the NBA) and Toni (Thank God we got you) Kukoc, the Bucks have a road to climb in April but it is a much less challenge than the one they faced in the month of March. As of today the Bucks are in a three-way tie with the New Orleans Hornets and yes, although somewhat inconceivable, the Miami Heat.

How, you may ask; is it possible that the Milwaukee Bucks are even in the hunt after an off-season from hell and the overtaking a new dynasty by a previously unknown name of Larry Harris. Well, my friends, very easily.

After a hard fought first round bout with the New Jersey Nets last year with players such as Sam Cassel, Ervin Johnson, Tim Thomas, Anthony (fat ass) Mason, and of course, the future hall of famer, Gary Payton, all of whom are either on other teams or sitting at home eating ribs and watching Sportscenter, (I will let you figure out that on your own), the Bucks ended their 2002-2003 season not knowing what the future would hold.

George Karl made it known that he hated Milwaukee, perhaps not the town itself but maybe a few players not to be named, (Tim Thomas). Gary Payton told the press as he cleaned his locker at the Bucks practice facility, it is highly unlikely he would be in a Bucks uniform next year. Then, there is Sam Cassel, who many thought his head matched the size of his ego, (Picture an overgrown watermelon that has been sitting out too long). The Milwaukee Bucks of just one season ago are a completely revitalized team. No more Sam, (HOORAY), no more Ray, (dumbest trade in franchise history, including Dirk Nowitski), and of course no more Glenn, (no more rotweillers running through the affluent areas of Shorewood and River Hills, not to mention no more run ins with whichever woman he had call the MPD on a given night).

Now we have, umm......Oh yes, we have Michael “LET THIS BE MY TIME” Redd (Finally a player with the ability to shoot, defend and keep his nose clean, no dig to you Mr. Ford). We also have the ever so classy team leader Toni Kukoc, who yet again proves that he has every right to still be a player to lead any NBA team in the league. We also have a guy who I have considered to be the most underrated player in the league for five years by the name of Joe Smith. Remember when being the number one overall pick actually meant something? But, however, when you play under another guy named Kevin Garnett, how can you not be overlooked. Then there is Desmond Mason, a man who prides himself on class. Not only is he the only good result from the Ray Allen debacle, he is also a man who donates much of his time and money to local charities in the city of Milwaukee. I cannot remember a player with as much charm and class as Mason since, well, I am only twenty-seven, so I cannot remember any.

So, you Bucks fans, although the team of the past is gone, as is most of the coaching staff (THANK GOD), there are many many advantages to the newly revitalized Milwaukee Bucks of our future. T.J can lead this team if he can keep his friends where they belong, Van Horn can bring us his long, and I mean LONG shooting skills, and Mason and Redd can keep pounding the paint the way all successful NBA teams have to in order to make a name for themselves.

Believe you me, I am not saying I believe that our Milwaukee Bucks will receive those million dollar rings come June, but my friends, there is just a flicker of light that helps me think this team is as good, if not better than the team we saw lose single handily to a scum bag from Philly three seasons ago. Again, no names, but initials A.I., and I do not mean Artificial Intelligence. The team of our future is a force to reckoned with, no thanks to Mr. Karl or Mr. Kohl. This team is the terrific brainstorm of two basketball geniuses one named Terry and the other named Larry.

Although, it will not be an easy road, as T.J. has got to get healthy and Van Horn has got to shoot, together this team is a diamond in the rough. Do not let these big namers called Lebron and Carmelo capture your soul, your Milwaukee Bucks have nothing but success and greatness ahead of them.

Just please, Mr. Porter and Mr. Harris, care what your players do in their free time. That is the only way we have a chance.

As always, I would like your feedback; good or bad. Until next week, where we will focus on the IMPROVING Milwaukee Brewers as they open their season at Miller Park on Good Friday. Oh Jesus, what a dilemma that will be, enjoy the games and keep your noses clean.

For now, I sign off.....Marty the Sports Chick.
