WANTED FOR SLAYING THE GAME

Special to the Readers of Milwaukeeworld.com

By Michael Horne

And The MilwaukeeWorld Hound Dog Team

Eleven members of Milwaukee's champion Bicycle Polo Team were arrested by Milwaukee County Sheriff Deputies on trespassing charges at around 5:30 p.m. last evening, Sunday, January 10th, 2010 and were jailed before their release this morning. Some spent longer than nine hours incarcerated before being released, according to a person familiar with cycle circles.
One of those arrested told the Hound Dog he was surprised at being jailed pending the issuance of a mere citation. It was his first arrest for any offense. He said that the deputies did not find any illegal substances on any of the arrestees or any evidence of criminal activities at the site.

According to Eric Kremin, one of those arrested, writing at mkebikepolo.com:

In the end they arrested 4 college students, 4 college graduates, an Artist, 2 bicycle mechanics and new player to find absolutely nothing. No drugs no warrants, not a damn thing. They wasted our time and the city’s over a simple game that we are passionate about, bike polo.

Those arrested included bicycle messengers, bicycle shop employees, and Kremin, an inventor / manufacturer of polo accessories for bicycles. Members of the team, known as the Beaver Boys, placed second in the Midwest Bike Polo Champeenships in November, losing to Chicago's Machine Politics.

Team members have traveled internationally in the last year, spreading this city's fame and drawing players to Milwaukee from places like Paris. We could use more tourists from Paris around here.

MAY BE ARMED WITH A PLASTIC MALLET

The arrests occurred at the county-owned O'Donnell parking structure on Milwaukee's lakefront, long the site of the team's clandestine practices.  The team had been searching for a winter practice facility, preferably one that was lit, but had difficulty finding a suitable location.

RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING PARISIANS TO MILWAUKEE IN 2009

The O'Donnell structure, otherwise unused at that hour and day, has relatively unobstructed flat surfaces sufficient for a decent practice session. This writer personally witnessed a spirited match held at the garage last summer. The team had hoped to use the Red Arrow Park skating rink for matches during the non-skating season, but was denied by the Parks Department, citing nonsense reasons.

RELEASED FROM JAIL. WHAT WILL HE INVENT NEXT?

The Sheriff has shown a continual pattern of inhospitability to the bicycle polo players whom he cannot distinguish from vandals, graffiti artists, or card-carrying Democrats, apparently.

Milwaukeeworld extends its condolences to the Beaver Boys and has sent a request to the Sheriff for information on this incident.

Update: Tuesday, January 12th, 2009: The Sheriff's deputies took the players' mallets which have not been returned to them. Players checked the courthouse Dumpsters to see if they were in the trash. They weren't.

The parking structure is hardly a high-crime scene. Only eight citations have been written there since 1998 -- three of them for prohibited skateboarding or roller skating.

Here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's coverage of the story by Tom Held.

A fundraiser for the Milwaukee Polo 11 will be held at an upcoming date at Regano's Roman Coin.

The Milwaukee Courier Company has offered the use of its cargo van to transport the confiscated bicycles back to their owners. MCC has also signed an agreement to be the courier of record for Good Harvest Market customers.

incident seems similar to what skateboarders have gone through. Maybe this will help the county realize the need for a sanctioned bicycle polo court.

If anyone who reads this has warehouse space that may be suitable for bike polo playing during the winter months please contact mke bike polo at info@mkebikepolo.com.

one court is generally 150 ft x 80 ft of unobstructed surface area.

I still can't believe this happened to my MKE bike polo friends! Thank you for this article, Mr. Horne. Apparently MKE police have nothing better to do on a January evening than bust a few people who are just trying to improve their polo game and have a little fun. Good luck trying to find a winter polo court MKE! Oh and Bri you do look pretty badass in that pic.

Milwaukee Courier Company is offering use of cargo van to get these hooligans bikes out of the slammer. Maybe coordinate a pick up time tomorrow.

Really!?!? Arrested!?!? Crack houses, gangs, prostitution, murder, rape....bike polo??? I feel so much safer in this city knowing that David Clarke has made this a priority in his efforts to control crime in our city. Dog walkers, you've been warned!!!

This was not Milwaukee Police, but County Sheriff's Deputies. The MPD has more important things to deal with. Why they couldn't be cited at the scene and released, as MPD would do, is beyond me. A trip to the Co. Jail seems stupid.

C'mon, these guys have been warned by police before that they shouldn't be playing Polo in that parking structure, so who are you going to blame when they went back to play again. If not the players, then the owners of the structure, who likely called for police action. The police probably wouldn't have cared if there was not a call to action.

(Then again, their bike cop program in now being funded by impounded bike charges...)

The O'Donnell guys shouldn't kick 'em out, though. They should sponsor them. I've watched matches there before. There are no cars, plenty of space, and the players and audience are respectful of all the property around them.

I like these guys and girls and I really want to see Bike Polo grow and thrive here; I'm sure these players do too but that may mean getting more legit (and getting a real court, too).

Maybe they should bike 12 miles to the Milwaukee Sport Complex on Ryan Rd and get the county to open it at night.

Did the skateboarders and roller skaters get arrested and jailed too?

Well THANK GOODNESS the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies were available to cuff these scofflaws for the heinous crime of bicycle polo in a PUBLIC place (last I checked it's owned by the county, and we the public are still theoretically the COUNTY). How many deputies and vehicles did it take for this critical mission? How much $$$ in manpower and billable time did it take to harass, intimidate, ticket, confiscate, incarcerate, and generally just be douchebag bullies with badges?!? Pathetic.

Tiny Little Fish, 2 contradictory sentiments in 1 post... 1 whole paragraph about how they had it coming. Than also "The O'Donnell guys shouldn't kick 'em out, though. They should sponsor them. I've watched matches there before." I would hope that the bike polo players make sure you are never invited to their parties again.

Excellent use of taxpayer funded resources, you should all feel safe now knowing these people have been taken off the streets. NOT! What a joke! How about a warning? 11 tickets at $263 a piece, sounds profitable for an evenings work. I'm pretty sure the police/sheriff have better things to do with their time than harass bike polo players who are honing their skills. BIKE POLO IS NOT A CRIME!

County property, county deputies, county citations that, if the accused do not stipulate, must be prosecuted by the county DA. Well, Mr. Chisholm, how say ye?

Were the players warned by the sheriffs not to play there or by a 20 yr old part time park worker who is paid to pick up trash? What's the difference? Just because a part time park worker says it's trespassing, doesn't mean he knows the law.

Hey polo player, FUCK YOU. Little rich kid with his haughty white boy bullshit-- who the fuck is he to say the other kids are any more true as criminals than he is. I'm pretty sure that the black kid caught with the weed (who gets out a couple days later) sitting next to him has a lot of sympathy for the jackass who sneaks onto government property after being told not to, and then knocks shit around and giggles when something breaks.

Don't worry, daddy will take care of it.

Anonymous -- I had no idea how bitter you were. How dare you say these things about people you do not know!

None of the MKE bike polo players are rich,or have rich daddies, if they did there would be a court built for bike polo. When shit breaks they are mad because they gotta go to the thrift store to buy a new aluminum ski pole, or the bike shop for a new wheel.

Really? That is so stupid. I hope the sheriff gets in big trouble for harassing harmless athletes. I do like that they all look amused in their mugshots.

It sounds like the Sherrif's department is overfunded and the deputies can't find enough to do. Jail overcrouding does not seem to be a problem either. In these tough economic times, I see some fat to cut on ther next budget cycle. Please write or email your elected county representatives with this cost saving idea.
