If the governor of Wisconsin could appoint a school board member, he or she could find a precedent in the actions of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford who appointed a home-schooling mother (and pornographer) to the state's education commission, where her 16 colleagues elevated her to Chairman for 2009.
But his longtime chief education adviser, Kristin Maguire, resigned Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 as head of the South Carolina State Board of Education.
Apparently it was the home-schooling issue that did her in, although Maguire cited her elderly parents and the demands of raising teen children as the reasons for her abrupt resignation. Even in South Carolina the Republicans can't dissolve public schooling without running into a few roadblocks here and there.
The Fitsnews blog, however, suggests another reason for Maguire's departure may have to do with her nom de plume, "Bridget Keeney," which she is said to have used in numerous postings on internet sites dealing with salacious erotic material. [Go ahead and click -- he gives links.]
In her guise as Maguire, the pornographer - engineer is also a delegate to the South Carolina Republican Party where she is in charge of drafting its education platform. She is identified with the Conservative Christian wing of the party, as if it had another in the Palmetto State. One easy proof of that lies in her co-founding the South Carolina Parents Involved in Education, "a group that pushes for abstinence education, taxpayer dollars spent on private schools and the teaching of intelligent design, which is a theory that the universe's order and complexity is so great science alone cannot explain it."
She is an advocate of "abstinence only" sex education, so no fair reading her stories aloud to another. Avoid temptation!
MS. MAGUIRE ON CHILDREN
"I am an engineer by training,* so I apologize ahead of time for my love of numbers. But more than an engineer, as I said, I am a mom. As a mom in South Carolina, I care about my kids and their futures and I care about all of the kids in South Carolina and their futures. Bottom line: my daughters' futures and all of our futures are tied up together with all of the children in our state's futures. I know that the parents in South Carolina want the best for their kids. And we need to be demanding the best for every kiddo."
Excerpted from the essay, "A Healthy Appetite for Education Reform," by Kristin Maguire. The influence of Sarah Palin can be discerned by the reader both as to the literary merits of the composition and as to its colloquiality. -- Michael Horne
[* A Ceramic Engineer, at that, and apparently not licensed by the State of South Carolina. Ceramic Balls are one product of Ceramic Engineering -- but don't tell Bridget Keeney!--Ed.]
