You've got your BID, you've got your TID, now come and get your NID. Veteran developer Joseph Zilber will face the Milwaukee City Plan Commission on Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 at 1:45 to ask the board to approve his request to create Neighborhood Improvement District #1[NID], the city's very first. The $29,192 proposal would provide neighborhood ambassadors to serve The Brewery development at the site of the former Pabst Brewery. Funds would also provide for the lighting of the iconic "Pabst" sign that traverses W. Juneau Avenue.
The NID will join similar tools in the city's arsenal including Business Improvement Districts [BID] and Tax Incremental Financing Districts [TID; TIF]. NIDs are authorized by Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 66.1110, under the provisions of Wisconsin 2005 Act 186, which went into effect on April 7th, 2006. It resulted from legislation initiated in Wisconsin 2005 Assembly Bill 366, sponsored by Rep. Jon Richards.
The Brewery development will also be included as part of Business Improvement District #21, the downtown organization now in its 12th year. It is one of several additions planned to the borders of the district, headed by Beth Nicols. The measure will also be considered by the Plan Commission at its meeting.

CITY TAKES BIDS ON GIANT TABLE
SAID TO BE 72 FEET LONG;
IF IT WERE A YACHT, IT WOULD BE SEAWORTHY

The "72' Table"
[typewriter not included]

The City of Milwaukee is soliciting bids for a surplus table now located on the fourth floor of the Great Hall of the People. According to the offering on the city's website, glass-topped wooden (mahogany?) table with three drawers measures 38 inches wide by 72 feet long. Why, even if it were one-twelfth that length, it would still be a substantial piece of cabinetry! Bids rise in $1 increments. The most recent is for $31. Purchaser is responsible for the removal of the item. The auction ends Friday, September 22nd, 2008 at 1 p.m.. Act now! You may wind up in a bidding war with the Chipstone Foundation, but this is your chance to start accumulating a used municipal furniture collection of the first order.
