Milwaukee restaurateur R. C. Schmidt, Jr. has expanded his empire by purchasing the Harp Irish Pub, 113 E. Juneau Avenue. Schmidt registered the business as Harp Irish Pub, Inc. in papers filed with the state of Wisconsin yesterday, Thursday, July 24th, 2008.
The Harp, a 1,938 square foot tavern that has been in existence since antiquity, sits on a riverfront lot of 3,590 square feet at the foot of the Juneau Avenue bridge, and was sold by Mitchell Wakefield, its longtime owner. It could not be immediately determined if Schmidt bought the real estate, which records indicate is owned by the Zilber Family Partnership LLC. The land is valued at $107,700 and its improvements at $243,300 for a total of $351,000. [Update -- Tuesday, July 29th, 2008: The Zilber organization issued a release today indicating that a Zilber family trust, which has held the property since 1985, is selling it to R.C. Schmidt. The terms were not disclosed.--Ed.]
Schmidt's Milwaukee taverns and restaurants include Louise's, 801 N. Jefferson St.; Trinity, just across N. Edison St. from the Harp at 125 E. Juneau Ave.; Rudy's Mexican Restaurant, next door to Trinity at 1122 N. Edison St.; Water Street Brewery, next door to Rudy's at 1101 N. Water St.; The Oakland Trattoria at 2856 N. Oakland Ave.; Historic Turner Hall, 1034 N. 4th St.; and the place that started it all, R.C.'s at 1530 E. North Ave.
Tavern owners lead terribly complicated lives and are as hard to track down as bin Laden, so there is no comment as yet from any of the principals in this transaction.
FUN FACT!
There are still over 1,000 Class "B" Tavern licenses in Milwaukee that belong to people other than R. C. Schmidt or Mike Eitel and his partners.

That's a lot of Irish pubs for one company to own. In fact Milwaukee has an abundance of them: Mo's Irish Pub, County Clare, Irish Pub, Buckley's Kiskeam Inn, Judge's Irish Pub, Murphy's Irish Pub, Halliday's Irish Pub, Brocach Irish Pub, Paddy's Pub, O'Danny's Pub, Fitzgibbons Pub, Jim Hegarty's Pub, Caffrey's Pub, Mc Bob's Pub & Grill, Flannery's, Champion's Pub, Mcgillycuddy's, Slim McGinn's, O'Connor's Perfect Pint, Flanigan's Call Box, O'Brians, and McGuire's Bar are a few.
You're right, Oz. And not all of them are Irish-owned. Add the Harp to the list.
Many of those named have only one irish thing about them, a shamrock on the door, some feature an authentic irish menu, and some may not have irish owners, but the people involved the most in the running's are irish
