Joey's to Close
Joey's Italian Restaurant, 1601 N. Jackson St. will close tomorrow, Sunday August 19th, 2007, at the conclusion of a neighborhood block party. The restaurant was one of the few remaining neighborhood, family, Sicilian restaurants (take your pick) and was a favored spot for judicial luncheons.
The building is for sale by Jennie Alioto, its owner since 1978. A recent city reppraisal shifted the values of the land and its improvements, raising the former and depreciating the latter. The land value of the 5,040 square foot property value jumped from $22,700 to $115,900, while the 1900 building dropped from $389,000 to $296,000. The property is not far from the Park East redevelopment corridor. "The Flatiron," a condominium development at the only city-owned Park East property, is a block away and is nearing completion. Further up N. Jackson St., a four family condominium is being built on what had long been a vacant lot overlooking the city.
